What Is a QR Code?
A QR code (Quick Response code) is a type of matrix barcode — a machine-readable optical label that contains information about the item to which it is attached. Unlike traditional one-dimensional barcodes that store data in a series of parallel lines, QR codes store data in two dimensions: both horizontally and vertically. This allows them to hold significantly more information in a much smaller space.
The name "Quick Response" comes from the original intention: to allow high-speed component scanning during automotive manufacturing. Denso Wave, a subsidiary of Toyota, developed the technology in 1994. Unlike traditional barcodes, QR codes can be read from any orientation and include built-in error correction, making them robust even when partially damaged or dirty.
Today, QR codes are used far beyond their industrial origin. Smartphone cameras can read QR codes natively, turning any physical surface into a digital link. From sharing Wi-Fi passwords to making payments, the QR code has become one of the most versatile data-sharing tools available.
How Does a QR Code Store Data?
QR codes encode data using a pattern of black modules arranged in a square grid on a white background. The black squares represent binary 1s and the white squares represent binary 0s. When you scan a QR code with your phone camera, the scanning software interprets this grid and converts it back into the original data.
QR codes support four encoding modes: numeric (digits 0-9 only), alphanumeric (digits, uppercase letters, and a few symbols), byte (any 8-bit data, including lowercase letters and Unicode), and kanji (optimized for Japanese characters). Numeric mode is the most efficient, allowing up to 7,089 digits in a single code, while byte mode — the most flexible — can store up to 2,953 characters.
The amount of data a QR code can hold depends on its version (size), which ranges from Version 1 (21×21 modules) to Version 40 (177×177 modules). Higher versions have more modules and greater data capacity, but also require larger physical space when printed.
Parts of a QR Code
Every QR code contains several structural elements that scanning devices use to locate and orient the code:
- Finder patterns: The three large squares in the corners of every QR code. These tell the scanner that it's looking at a QR code and establish orientation. Without them, a scanner can't tell which way is up.
- Timing patterns: Alternating black and white modules between the finder patterns that help determine the size of the data matrix.
- Alignment patterns: Smaller finder patterns that appear in larger QR codes (Version 2 and above) to help correct perspective distortion when scanning at an angle.
- Quiet zone: The blank margin around the QR code — at least four modules wide — that separates the code from surrounding graphics. Cropping into this zone is a common reason QR codes fail to scan.
- Format information: Encodes the error correction level and mask pattern used, allowing the scanner to apply the correct decoding algorithm.
