Types of QR Codes — Model 1, Model 2, Micro QR & More

Not all QR codes are the same. Over three decades, the QR code family has expanded to include several variants optimized for different use cases — from tiny codes on electronic components to large-format codes with customizable center areas. Here's a complete guide to every QR code type and when to use each one.

QR Code Model 1 vs Model 2

Model 1 was the original QR code specification released in 1994. It supports up to 14 versions (sizes) with a maximum of 73×73 modules. Model 1 codes are functionally similar to Model 2 but with a smaller maximum data capacity and a slightly different alignment pattern layout. They are rarely used today.

Model 2 is the current standard and what virtually all modern QR code generators — including ZeroQR — produce. It was introduced in 1997 with improvements to alignment, making it easier for scanners to read codes at angles or when distorted. Model 2 supports up to Version 40 (177×177 modules) and an additional alignment pattern in the lower-right area of the code. Every QR code you see on products, posters, and menus today is almost certainly Model 2.

Micro QR Code

Micro QR codes are a smaller, simplified version of the standard QR code. They have only a single finder pattern (instead of three) and are designed for applications where space is extremely limited — printed circuit boards, tiny product labels, or microscopic identifiers on components. The Micro QR specification supports up to Version M4 (17×17 modules) and stores a maximum of 35 numeric characters or 21 alphanumeric characters.

Because Micro QR codes use fewer structural components, the quiet zone requirement is also smaller — only two modules instead of four. This makes them ideal for surface-mount electronics and manufacturing environments where every millimeter counts.

iQR Code

Introduced in 2008, the iQR code is a rectangular variant that can achieve higher data density than square QR codes. Unlike standard QR codes that are always square, iQR codes can be rectangular in shape, making them better suited for elongated spaces like the spine of a product or a narrow label strip. They support a maximum of 40,000 numeric characters — significantly more than standard QR codes.

iQR codes are relatively rare in consumer applications but are used in industrial logistics and inventory systems where maximizing data per square centimeter matters. Most standard QR code readers (including smartphone cameras) do not natively support iQR codes without specialized apps.

Frame QR

Frame QR codes introduce a "canvas area" — an empty region in the center of the code where you can place a logo, image, or text without breaking the QR code's scanability. Unlike simply overlaying a logo on a standard QR code (which eats into error correction headroom), Frame QR codes are designed with this canvas from the start, so the data modules are arranged around the canvas.

Frame QR is excellent for brand-conscious applications where the QR code should double as a design element. However, not all QR generators produce true Frame QR codes — many tools just overlay an image on a standard code, relying on error correction to compensate.

rMQR Code (Rectangular Micro QR)

The rMQR code, standardized in 2022 by ISO/IEC 23941, is the newest addition to the QR family. It is essentially a rectangular version of the Micro QR code — combining the small footprint of Micro QR with the flexibility of a rectangular shape. rMQR codes are designed for ultra-narrow spaces like the edge of a credit card, a cable label, or a single line on a product barcode strip.

rMQR codes can be as narrow as a single row of modules and support up to 361 numeric characters or 219 alphanumeric characters. Adoption is still growing, and not all scanning apps support rMQR yet, but the standard is backed by the same organization that created the original QR code.

Which Type Should You Generate?

For 99% of use cases — website links, text, Wi-Fi credentials, contact cards, and anything you want scanned by a smartphone — you want a standard QR Code Model 2. It's universally compatible, supported by every phone camera and QR scanning app, and can encode all the data types you're likely to need.
