QR Code Size Guide — Minimum Size, Resolution & Best Practices

Getting the size of a QR code right is the difference between a code that scans instantly and one that fails completely. The size you need depends on three factors: scan distance, data density, and whether the code will be printed or displayed digitally. Here's everything you need to know.

Minimum QR Code Print Size

The absolute minimum size for a printed QR code is 2 × 2 centimeters (about 0.8 × 0.8 inches). Below this, most smartphone cameras struggle to resolve the individual modules clearly enough to decode the data. But 2 cm is the bare minimum — for reliable scanning across devices, 3 cm or larger is recommended.

The key formula is the 10:1 scan distance rule: for every unit of QR code width, you get 10 units of reliable scan distance. A 2 cm QR code can be scanned from roughly 20 cm away. A 10 cm code can be scanned from 1 meter. An outdoor billboard QR code at 50 cm can be scanned from 5 meters — which is why you see large QR codes on posters and small ones on business cards.

QR Code Resolution Explained

Resolution matters when you're generating a QR code as an image file (PNG). The resolution determines how many pixels make up the QR code — which directly affects print quality. A 512×512 pixel QR code printed at 4 inches wide has 128 DPI (dots per inch), which is acceptable but not crisp. The same code printed at 1 inch has 512 DPI, which is perfectly sharp for any print application.
